Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water (between 105°F-115°F)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup shortening (melted)
  • Vegetable or peanut oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for cinnamon sugar filling)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (for cinnamon sugar filling)
  • 4 2/3 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons honey (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for glaze)
  • Warm water (as needed for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt; set aside.
  2. In another bowl, mix warm water, honey, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined; add melted shortening and mix again until combined.
  3. Using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients on low speed until just mixed.
  4. Increase mixer speed to medium and knead for about 8 minutes until somewhat sticky but workable.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat all sides in oil.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel; let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 2 hours until almost doubled in size.
  7. Prepare the cinnamon sugar filling by mixing cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl.
  8. Once risen, turn out the dough onto a floured surface; roll it into an 8” by 12” rectangle and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  9. Roll from one long side towards the clean edge tightly, brushing the clean edge with water before sealing.
  10. Trim off pinched ends and cut into equal one-inch pieces; place on parchment-lined baking sheet allowing space between each piece.
  11. Press down lightly on each piece before letting them rise again for about 45 minutes until puffy.
