Ingredients

Scale
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional, for filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 24 tbsp milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk, melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla extract. Stir this mixture into the dry ingredients gradually, adding the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  3. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in an oiled bowl; cover it and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  4. For the filling, mix together softened butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon in a small bowl.
  5. Once risen, roll out the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle. Spread the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over it; sprinkle with mini chocolate chips if desired. Roll tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  6. Place rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover them and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake rolls for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. While rolls bake, prepare cream cheese frosting by beating softened cream cheese with butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar along with vanilla extract and milk until desired consistency is reached.
  9. Once baked and slightly cooled, generously spread cream cheese frosting over top.
