  • 2 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 9 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 45 tbsp water/milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round baking pans.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; mix with dry ingredients.
  4. Gradually add hot water until smooth.
  5. Divide batter between pans and bake for about 30 minutes. Cool before frosting.
  6. In a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy.
  7. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
  8. Mix in vanilla extract and enough milk/water to reach desired consistency.
  9. Once cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top before adding the second layer. Frost sides and top as desired.
