  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 sticks unsalted butter
  • 2/3 cup strawberry preserves
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Red gel food coloring (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and hot coffee.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes completely before frosting them with strawberry buttercream made from butter, powdered sugar, strawberry preserves, salt, and vanilla.
